Natural Dyes: A Living Palette

Natural Dyes: A Living Palette

The colours we choose are not chosen from a Pantone book. They are gathered — from the bark of trees, the roots of plants, the shells left behind by the ocean. Natural dyeing is one of the oldest and most sophisticated traditions in textile making.

Leaves and Bark

Indigo is arguably the most complex of all natural dyes. The plant must be fermented in a vat over days, and the chemistry must be coaxed and maintained. A skilled dyer can read the surface of the vat — its colour, its behavior — to know when conditions are perfect.

How Colours Deepen

Unlike synthetic dyes which fade over time, natural dyes develop a patina. The blue of indigo deepens with every wash; the ochre of turmeric mellows from bright yellow to warm gold. When you invest in a naturally dyed garment, you are investing in something that grows more beautiful the longer it is worn.
